MANHOLE COVERS
Artist: David Katzenstein
In 1994 Katzenstein was commissioned by an art publication to do a series of photographs of manhole covers in New York City. He began the project near Washington Square Park and fanned out for blocks around in every direction. The process was to have his assistant watch for traffic as he set up a ladder often in the middle of the street to enable the consistent angle of view for all of the series. The interplay between the various types of covers and the street material surrounding it make for striking compositions.
