CHINA MARKETS
Artist: David Katzenstein
Text: Gay Feldman
Ephemera is a recurring theme throughout David Katzenstein’s body of work. Focusing his lens on everyday objects, the artist offers the viewer a nuanced perspective of history. Engaged by the concept of nostalgia, Katzenstein set out to explore the juxtapositions within a rapidly changing culture. The artist scoured local flea markets in search of vestiges of paraphernalia that raise questions around sentimentality and serve as markers of the Cultural Revolution. Taken between 2001-2004, the photographs in this portfolio offer an intimate perspective of a society in flux.
